How to Choose the Right Sofa Bed

The right sofa bed depends on three things: the size of the room, how often guests will use it, and what you want it to look like as a sofa. Here is a straightforward guide to help you decide.

For smaller rooms and studios

A 2 seater sofa bed or chair bed is the most practical choice. Both take up significantly less floor space than a three or four seater and still provide a proper sleeping surface when needed. Chair beds in particular are underused, they make excellent spare beds in home offices and reading rooms where a full sofa would be too large.

For rooms where guests visit regularly

If you have guests staying more than a few nights a year, choose a sofa bed with a pocket spring mattress. All models in our collection use pocket springs rather than foam. The difference in sleep quality is significant, especially for guests who stay multiple nights. Our 3 seater range opens to a king size sleeping surface and is the most popular choice for this use case.

For maximising seating and storage

A corner sofa bed is the most versatile piece of furniture in our range. The L-shaped configuration seats four to five adults, includes a built-in storage ottoman beneath the chaise for bedding and pillows, and opens to a king size bed. It is the closest thing to a sofa that does everything.

For matching an existing sofa bed

Our storage footstools are available in the same fabrics as our sofa bed range. If you want to add a coordinating footstool to an existing piece, order free fabric samples first to confirm the match before purchasing.

The mattress type is the most important factor. Cheaper sofa beds use bonded foam, which compresses over time and provides poor support. All sofa beds in the Sofa Bed Expert collection use pocket spring mattresses. Individually pocketed springs provide independent support across the full sleeping surface — the same technology used in high-quality mattresses. This makes a significant difference to sleep quality, whether for regular guests or as a comfortable everyday bed.
Delivery typically takes 2-3 weeks, or 3-4 weeks for Scotland and Cornwall. We keep you updated throughout production, and around 5-7 days before delivery we’ll contact you to arrange a suitable date and provide a 3-hour delivery time slot. A traditional pull-out sofa bed usually has a thin mattress folded inside a metal frame, which can feel uncomfortable and uneven. Our sofa beds work differently - the sleeping surface is part of the sofa itself, using pocket springs in both the seat and mattress.
